Frequently Asked Questions

What's a typical session look like?

Sessions will vary based on what you need. Generally, sessions will start with a grounding or mindfulness activity, followed by a set amount of time to play, and end with an opportunity to reflect and integrate what came up during play.

Why would I need a therapist to play?

Similar to how talk therapy is different from talking to a friend, play therapy is more than just playing. Play therapy provides a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore. My role is to witness and support your development and desired changes, creating a therapeutic relationship similar to that of a talk therapist.

How would I play during a session?

I have art supplies, building materials like Legos and Magnatiles, board games and card games, tarot and oracle decks, stuffed animals, and a sand tray with figurines. You are also welcome to bring in anything else you'd like to play with.

I work from a non-directive approach, since this approach helps cultivate autonomy and empowerment. That means that you will be able to choose what and how you engage each session.

However, some clients prefer to have more structure or direction, especially at first, which I can provide.

What if I don't feel like playing during a session?

That's okay! I'm trained in contemplative psychotherapy and like to incorporate mindfulness, parts work, and somatic exercises with clients. We can do this is instead of or in addition to play in any session.

What if therapy hasn't worked for me before?

Play therapy can access your emotional world without relying on words, so it can offer a different route to support than traditional talk therapy.

Isn't play therapy for kids?

While play therapy is most commonly practiced with kids, there's a growing movement to make this available to people of all ages.

I believe passionately that we all need more play in our lives, and that play therapy can be incredibly helpful for certain people.

I do also work with children at Empowered Play. If you have a child, you can find more information here.
